🧠Future 100 2021 is out!
This is one of my favorite reports that is released yearly by JWT Intelligence. I always have it downloaded on my desktop, and I keep coming back to it for cases and ideas. Ten chapters have with ten trends each— culture, communication, tech, travel and hospitality, food and drink are some of the blocks. So if you work in any of these and other areas, I recommend taking a look.
My Nexialist Tip for today is how I navigate more extensive reports like these if you don't want to read it like a book: I first browse through the index and check what interests me. Then I skim through it, and if any trends make me curious, I read the whole thing. It might seem quite simple for some, but it helps me avoid just keeping it in "the drawer," always waiting to have enough time to read the whole thing.
🍫 Bitter Reality
Last year I had to research about supply-chain for a project I was part of with Envisioning. I learned something quite shocking: Slavery affects more than 40 million people worldwide – more than at any other time in history. The cocoa industry is one example: in the hard-to-trace farms in Ghana and Ivory Coast, slave work and child-labor are still happening, and we are still buying chocolate, even after 15 years of the industry promising to end it.
Tony Chocolonely came around to tackle that: It was founded by a Dutch journalist, Teun Van de Keuken, who was investigating and exposing this atrocity, to which authorities took no measures. The brand was his way of doing something about it. They have been named Netherland's most sustainable brand for three consecutive years. This week they released 'lookalikes' of other famous brands' products to send a message: it's possible to do it without child-labor and still be delicious. Of course, no brand is perfect, but the level of transparency in their communication is quite elevated, with open reports about their yearly activities and how they manage their supply-chain open-sourced for other businesses to implement.

🥄 International food
I am OBSESSED with Beryl Shereshewsky. With help from her community, she makes dishes from different countries that have something in common. It's just so exciting to see her tasting the food she made and being so enthusiastic while we learn a little bit about other countries' cultures. In this episode, she shows food that you eat when you're sick. The Brazilian recipe is from Maranhão, and I had never heard about it before, so kudos to her for doing that.
🥘 A Brazilian Cookbook in English
Polyana is the Brazilian woman who told Berry about Caldo de Ovos (egg soup) from the video above. She was so excited that I had to check her project out. She used to run a conscious tourism business in Brazil, but she had to make some changes with the pandemic. She released this book with recipes by local chefs from different Brazilian regions, and it seems like a fantastic selection. There's a free version of the book if you want to take a look.
💅 Talking about Maranhão
I can't help but add one of my favorite hits from Pabllo Vittar and tell you this queen is from Maranhão.
💃🏽Herstory
This HBO Max series has been giving me so much life. In Spain, La Veneno was famous in the 90s for being an outspoken and unapologetic media personality and sex worker. In the series, Valeria is a university student who wants to write a paper about Veneno, analyzing the media's responsibility on trans visibility. The way the story is told, comparing both of these characters' trajectories and bringing other trans characters (and actresses), makes it unique and engaging. It's based on real events and people, and even some of these people play parts in the series or do cameo appearances. It gave me chills and made me cry a few times already, and I'm still halfway through. Great to practice your queer Spanish.
🤣Did you say munchies?
