Welcome to yet another corner of a millenial’s brain, The Nexialist
Something I learned from living in the Netherlands: if the sun is out, go out to get your vitamin D. In the winter I remember regretting not taking the chance to go out some days when I could have. So this week, we were gifted some unexpected late-summer days, and I decided to go for it. This means that The Nexialist lost its priority to the last moments of tanning-worthy sun, and today I bring to you another quickie. But don’t worry, I could not hold myself and actually could add some nexus. I hope you enjoy it:
🌀Kaleidoscopic Pop
I thought of the title Psycodelickelodeon for this song, but then NME used a better name: Funk-Driven Kaleidoscopic Pop. Can’t wait for her new album to come out!
🦄Forró of Chromatica
On Friday, Lady Gaga dropped the Chromatica Remix Album and I have had it on repeat since then. Of course, I’m choosing to highlight Pabllo’s contribution around here, which I’m really proud of. This remix brings to us some Forró, a sweet and important rhythm from the Northeastern region of Brazil.
Also, it got me thinking about how her authenticity along with the Brabo Music Team paid off. What launched Pabllo to the mainstream in Brazil in 2015 was exactly that: a Brazilian version of a pop song. In Open Bar, her first big hit, her inspiration was Major Lazer & DJ Snake’s Lean On (feat. MØ). Later she was launched to the world with that same Major Lazer singing and dancing Sua Cara. The risk paid off then, and it paid off now. On Youtube, this remix is the most played track from the album by far, with 1.8M views (the second place has less than half than that.) On Spotify, it amounted to more than 3M, also the leading track.
The best part about Dawn Of Chromatica is it feels like a celebration of community. SOPHIE was instrumental in building that community and so was Gaga. When The Fame arrived almost 15 years ago, she felt like an outlier in the pop community, and by the time Artpop arrived several years later she was being ostracised for going too absurd. Now, however, she’s joined by artists who have carried the torch, creating a community for musicians who follow their creative tick, unconcerned as to whether it registers as weird or inaccessible.

Retrogrado is a trip I love to watch sometimes. It was also produced by Rodrigo Gorky, part of Pabllo’s producing team, Brabo Music Team. Fun fact: my brother’s name is Filipe, so it makes me love them even more.
💅Streisand Effect
Good to hear ROSALÍA is back, especially joining forces with Dominican rapper Tokischa.
Reading her Wiki page I learned the term Streisand Effect. “In October 2020 she released the track "Desacato Escolar", a collaboration with Yomel El Meloso and Leo RD, on streaming platforms. The track caused controversy for its lyrics referencing prostitution. It even got taken down off YouTube. Nevertheless, it saw a Streisand effect and grew rapidly in numbers.”
“The Streisand effect is a phenomenon that occurs when an attempt to hide, remove, or censor information has the unintended consequence of increasing awareness of that information, often via the Internet. It is named after American entertainer Barbra Streisand, whose attempt to suppress the California Coastal Records Project photograph of her residence in Malibu, California, taken to document California coastal erosion, inadvertently drew greater attention to it in 2003.”

Shygirl’s new video using deepfake-like images from celebrities was a fun find this week. I hope they don’t get in trouble. Or would that cause a Streisand Effect? 😏

I haven’t seen Billie Eilish’s “cinematic concert experience” on Disney+ yet, but this for sure got me interested. To me, Oxytocin is one of the best songs in her new album.
