welcome to another week elevating pieces of content stacked neatly, the nexialist!
[door opening] hey, you! i hope this elevator newsletter finds you well! this weekend amsterdam was corporately blessed by the canal pride (the rain could have waited for monday, but i will not complain), so the city was full of people, events and branded boats and posters. i write to you horizontally from the sofa, as my body is still recovering from dancing, drinking and then biking under the drenching rain, which did feel like a true cleansing ritual. by no coincidence, this week’s nexialist drifted into the world of work: frameworks, perks, futures, ai, labor rights and other stuff. [doors closing] enjoy your ride 🫀✨

💼EDGY: a language for collaborative enterprise design
this goody shared in
’s newsletter has been sitting on my content pile for a few weeks. you can find a one-page summary here. it’s just so satisfying to have such a neatly organized visualization of a connected company. a great difference from the siloed companies we still see today.Introducing a simple but powerful language everybody can understand and relate to, EDGY enables designers, architects and change makers to co-design a coherent enterprise by identifying the most impactful perspectives and translating between them.
Well-defined, reusable Enterprise Elements turn a complex enterprise into a set of interconnected parts, ready to be designed, mapped and transformed.

✨perquisite
perquisite (noun) | per·qui·site ˈpər-kwə-zət
1 : a privilege, gain, or profit incidental to regular salary or wages. especially : one expected or promised
2: GRATUITY, TIP
3: something held or claimed as an exclusive right or possession
now… i never knew perks were short for another word, and now i do. somehow perks were etched in my mind near the word spark, maybe because companies make all the perks look very shining. or maybe because of “perky?”
📋the irregular report: work
irregular labs released their 4th irregular report focused on the future of work (and genz, as they claim to be made by and for them). first, i had never seen this kind of visualization/navigation on a google sheets and it’s just ingenious, especially when talking about work. it also allows for commenting and interacting with the report (don’t worry, there is also a pdf if the spreadsheet is triggering). there is a notion of work evolving with the web (1.0, 2.0 and 3.0), and then the pillars of this third iteration. it’s worth it reading the whole thing:
"For example, look at the dominant discourse framing the current state of Work as an “Anti-Ambition” or “Anti-Work” Movement, painting a picture of people simply not wanting to work. In fact, they are not rejecting Work per se. They are rejecting the current system of Work (Work 2.0) and demanding a world of Work anchored in values such as equity, inclusivity, multiplicity, and co-creation (Work 3.0). Or, to put a finer point on it, they are not demanding it but doing it. Through a sustained series of rips and recalibrations—perceptible and imperceptible—they are realizing an emerging future of Work.

🌐explode on impact
thomas klaffke’s rabbit holes this week had some great links, as usual. he mentioned toby lowe’s medium text “explode on impact”, which has a great point. this illustration is perfectly explaining what it’s about (and of course, shows the ambivalence of the neatness of the first reference in this week’s nexialist).
TL:DR — It is impossible for organisations to “demonstrate their impact” if they work in complex environments. Asking them to do so requires them to create a fantasy version of the story of their work. This corruption of data makes doing genuine change work harder because it is difficult to learn and adapt from corrupted data.
below, “the systems map of the outcome of obesity illustrates this perfectly — it shows all the factors contributing to people being obese (or not), and all the relationships between those factors.” it is truly fascinating being able to visualize this whole system (and it is possible there are things that are not there).

🦾AI, climate justice & labor rights
In the second half of 2023, generative AI is dominating headlines. Policymakers, technologists, and activists are all grappling with its potential implications for communities and the planet. Integrating LLMs (large language models) into search engines may multiply the carbon emissions associated with each search by as much as five times. At a moment when climate change is already having catastrophic effects and the final 2023 IPCC report indicates that the current gap between net zero pledges and global GHG (greenhouse gas) emissions reductions means that it is highly likely that the earth’s warming will exceed 1.5 degrees Celsius by the end of the century, the current hype around AI seems especially dangerous. Simultaneously, generative AI poses risks to workers in a number of fields, continuing a long trend of labor exploitation through apparent automation. Despite the perception that generative AI will automate jobs and render knowledge workers obsolete, research shows time and time again that humans, and globally dispersed, poorly paid annotators, are still operating behind AI. A difficult to parse supply chain of ecological extraction and labor exploitation facilitates the apparent magic of AI.
the syllabus shared ainow institute’s report by tamara kneese focused on ai, climate justice and labor rights. it brings some crucial points to the discussion, which are overshadowed by the hype.

🇪🇸is it balearic?
if you follow the nexialist for a while you know how obsessed i’ve been with her. i just learned róisìn means little rose, and it’s the cutest thing i learned this week. also, i did feel like a lama watching her while she answers the questions, sings to them. it’s so nice to get to know a bit better artists that we admire and see that even they have their insecurities, where their energy/inspiration comes from,
also, i learned this new word: balearic. according to the urban dictionary:
The word Balearic in its most most simple terms means "of or having to do with the Balearic Islands" which are a group of small islands in the Western Mediterranean near the coast of Spain.
More specifically however, the term Balearic (or "Balearic Beat") has come to mean a genre of music which became popular on the islands of the same name, specifically the Balearic Island of Ibiza.
The Balearic genre is broad and almost means "eclectic" more than any specific style of sound. Generally, it tends towards sunny, melodic, "feel-good" electronic music, as it's birthplace was on the warm sunny beaches of the islands. This may encompass atmospheric house, downtempo, chillout, nu-disco, latin, soul, dub, and re-edits.
As mentioned before, the genre is about being eclectic, so a Balearic Beat DJ will often flow through many different sounds inside a single set. In fact, "Balearic" might be better thought of as a style of DJ'ing rather than a style of music. Still, the flavor always comes back to that sunny island feel and often incorporates smooth soul sounds, acoustic strings and guitar, dreamy vocals, and tempos under 120 BPM.

🔫freak me now
i haven’t stopped listening to this hit since it came out last week. the colors, the hair and the vibes reminded me deee-lite’s iconic groove is in the heart. also, it’s so nice to see them taking themselves not seriously while giving us great entertainment. we need more of this.
🛗elevator eyes
since we have some corporate theme going on, and this just came out, i couldn’t help myself. tove lo looks beautiful as always, and i love the glamour.
i’m on vacation, no obligations
but maybe we fall in love, let the stars be our audience
tell me what you want, what you want, what you want
you keep giving me elevator eyes, elevator eyes
i’m not surprised, you’re hypnotized, going up and down

🔌Let’s Collab?
I truly believe innovation comes from bringing improbable areas together, and that’s why I called this project The Nexialist. Some sectors are known to be self-referencing and hermetic. Sometimes teams are on autopilot mode, focused on the daily grind, which hinders innovation. As a Nexialist, I like to burst these bubbles, bringing references from different areas, and maintaining teams inspired and connected to the Zeitgeist.
I offer inspiration sessions called Brainsparks, creative desk research (Zeitgeist Boost), Plug’n’Play deals for workshops and sprints, and other bespoke formats. If you want to know more about this, send me an e-mail with your challenge(s) and we can figure something out together. Check out my website and some work I’ve done below:
